Sayingthis is the way its always been donenot only makes you sound lazy and resistant to change, but it could make your boss wonder why you havent tried to improve things on your own. If you really are doing things the way theyve always been done, theres almost certainly a better way.Its not my faultIts never a good idea to cast blame. Be accountable. If you had any role - no matter how small - in whatever went wrong, own it. If not, offer an objective, dispassionate explanation of what happened. Stick to the facts, and let your boss and colleagues draw their own conclusions about whos to blame. The moment you start pointing fingers is the moment people start seeing you as someone who lacks accountability for their actions. This makes people nervous. Instead of I cant zulauf those numbers, say I dont yet know how to run that type of analysis. Sayingits not fairsuggests that you think life is supposed to be fair, which makes you look immature and nave. If you dont want to make yourself look bad, you need to stick to the facts, stay constructive, and leave your interpretation out of it. For instance, you could say, I noticed that you assigned Ann that big project I was hoping for. Would you mind telling me what went into that decision? Id like to know why you thought I wasnt a good fit, so that I can work on improving those skills.Thats not in my job descriptionThis often sarcastic phrase makes you sound as though youre only willing to do the bare minimum required to keep getting a paycheck, which is a bad thing if you like job security. If your boss asks you to do something that you feel is inappropriate for your position (as opposed to morally or ethically inappropriate), the best move is to complete the task eagerly. Later, schedule a conversation with your boss to discuss your role in the company and whether your job description needs an update. This ensures that you avoid looking petty. It also enables you and your boss to develop a long-term understanding of what you should and shouldnt be doing.This may be a silly idea/Im going to ask a stupid questionThese overly passive phrases instantly erode your credibility. Even if you follow these phrases with a great idea, they suggest that you lack confidence, which makes the people youre speaking to lose confidence in you. Dont be your own worst critic. If youre not confident in what youre saying, no one else will be either. And, if you really dont know something, say, I dont have that information right now, but Ill find out and get right back to you.Ill tryJust like the wordthink, trysounds tentative and suggests that you lack confidence in your ability to execute the task. Take full ownership of your capabilities. If youre asked to do something, either commit to doing it or offer an alternative, but dont say that youll try because it sounds like you wont try all that hard.This will only take a minuteSaying that something only takes a minute undermines your skills and gives the impression that you rush through tasks. Unless youre literally going to complete the task in 60 seconds, feel free to say that it wont take long, but dont mak e it sound as though the task can be completed any sooner than it can actually be finished.I hate this jobThe last thing anyone wants to hear at work is someone complaining about how much they hate their job. Doing so labels you as a negative person and brings down the morale of the group. Bosses are quick to catch on to naysayers who drag down morale, and they know that there are always enthusiastic replacements waiting just around the corner.Hes lazy/incompetent/a jerkThere is no upside to making a disparaging remark about a colleague. If your remark is accurate, everybody already knows it, so theres no need to point it out. If your remark is inaccurate, youre the one who ends up looking like a jerk. There will always be rude or incompetent people in any workplace, and chances are that everyone knows who they are. If you dont have the power to help them improve or to fire them, then you have nothing to gain by broadcasting their ineptitude. Announcing your colleagues incompetence comes across as an insecure attempt to make you look better. Law school counterpunchesLaw school counterpunchesAs more law firms join the Morgan Lewis bandwagon, canceling their summer associate programs (a development Legal OnRamps Paul Lippe likened to Armageddon), its no doubt satisfying to some students to see one law school strike back, albeit with a blow that is more gesture than jab. As Above the Law reports today, Fordham Law School has banned Reed Smith from its campus for five years because of the firms lack of professionalism in belatedly pulling out of the on-campus recruiting process this year (the firm is still hosting a summer program it just decided not to interview at Fordham to staff it).In related news, Lippe offers more ideas on how law schools might better prepare lawyers for the future. While he makes a number of good points, his premise strikes me as unduly narrow, focused as it is on corporate clientsthats OK if you look at law as exclusively a tafelgeschirr industry, but I agree with the comments by Ray Campbell (visit ing professor at Penn State) suggesting that the study of law is in factand should bemore Is being a lawyer just about serving paying clients? Not to diminish the importance of providing awesome service to clients, but I think a lawyers duties are a bit more nuanced than that. You can be a great, client oriented lawyer and keep an eye on the bigger game, but you diminish the profession and short sell what law schools need to do if you take too narrow a view of a lawyers role in society.- posted by vera

Merry Campbell Selected as ASMEs New Faces-College Edition Winner for 2014 Merry Campbell Selected as ASMEs New Faces-College Edition Winner for 2014 Merry Campbell Selected as ASMEs New Faces-College Edition Winner for 2014Meredith (Merry) Campbell, a third-year mechanical engineering student at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H., has been named as ASMEs winner of the 2014 DiscoverE New Face of Engineering-College Edition program. Campbell was one of 15 engineering students from various engineering societies who were selected as the winners of this years competition, which highlights the accomplishments of third-, fourth- and fifth-year university engineering students.Campbell was cited for her role in founding the Kenya Connection Club, a program that creates instructional videos to help professors at Africa zwischenstaatlich University connect with students using a learning management system. As a 2014 New Faces-College Edition winner, she will receive a $1,000 scholarship fro m ASME and appear with this years other winners on the New Faces of Engineering-College Edition Facebook page. A non-traditional engineering student, Campbell began pursuing a mechanical engineering degree after returning to school at the age of 23. I have never had a parent or guidance counselor speak to me about engineering, she wrote in her application for New Faces-College Edition. It saddens me to think back on that, because I spent a long time finding engineering. I think that is why I want to be involved in engineering and science education for young people, because I want them to have the opportunities I was never afforded. Campbell has served the Daniel Webster ASME student section in various capacities, including the position of student section chair, which she has held for the past two years. She has also participated in ASMEs Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) competition, and volunteers in her local community with engineering programs for children. Campbell was o ne of three student members nominated by ASME for the New Faces-College Edition honor this year. The three finalists Campbell, Ashton Archer and Emily Miner were announced during Engineers Week in February.
